1. How would you briefly define Tally?


A tally is accounting software used by professionals for tax, billing, inventory, and compliance.

It was developed by Tally Solutions, an Indian company with its headquarters in Bangalore.

2. What does ERP in Tally ERP stand for?


ERP stands for enterprise resource planning. Tally can also be defined as an enterprise resource planning software.

ERP systems or software are used to track business resources like capital and production capacities as well as commitments like purchase orders and payroll.

Since Tally manages such functions for retail or other enterprises, it is called Tally ERP.

3. What is Tally primarily used for?


Tally serves a lot of purposes for the financial management of a business. Its main functions include basic accounting, costing, administering payroll, budgeting, and calculating interest.

Tally also helps with functions like filing tax returns, preparing balance sheets and profit/loss statements, calculating GST, fund flow statements, etc.

It can synchronize and manage data like this across multiple locations.

4. What does Tally ERP 9 do?


Tally ERP 9 is an accounting software following in the tradition of previous versions of Tally.

It manages financial functions for businesses and other organizations. It maintains ledgers, invoices, budgets and includes other salient features.

5. How would you compare Tally ERP 9 with Tally 7.2?


Tally ERP 9 is a newer version of the program, which has succeeded Tally 7.2.

Both programs perform the essential functions of managing finances, including accounting, reporting, and inventory.

However, Tally ERP 9 has added features like payroll management, TDS calculation, and GST which makes it a better fit for current accountants.

6. What are some of the new features which Tally ERP 9 comes with?


Tally ERP 9 has a couple of new useful features for tax and easier management of data.

It enables tax audit functions, entering GST in invoices, facilitates TDS functions, VAT, XBRL, payroll and salary, and excise for manufacturers.

It also makes work easier by notifying users of credit limits, assigning a unique ID to number and sequence vouchers, and including the choices to print bank details, emailing reports to beneficiaries, and even connecting remotely.

7. What is a group in Tally ERP 9?


A group in Tally is a collection of ledgers of the same kind.

For instance, a group may include common operating costs like bills for electricity, phones, travel, etc, incurred by a business.

Tally has 28 groups by default, 15 of which are called primary groups, while the rest are subgroups.

8.What are the types of ledgers which Tally ERP 9 lets you make?


Tally allows one to generate multiple types of ledgers, namely the ones for sales/purchase, income and expense, party ledger, tax ledger, bank account, and current liabilities.

11. What is reversing journals for?


Reversing journals is a specific entry in Tally which is reversed automatically after the date of issue.

12. What is a contra voucher and what is the Tally shortcut for it?


A contra voucher is one that details the transfer of funds from a bank account to a cash account and/or vice versa.

The shortcut for it is F4.

13.What is the use of Tally vault?


Tally Vault is a security feature used to protect company details by encrypting data.

It uses a password secured by an algorithm, so when you select the company from the menu, the details show up as asterisks (*****).

The data is decrypted only with a valid password. Thus, those details cannot be easily accessed and confidentiality can be maintained.

14. What would one need to connect remotely to Tally ERP 9?


Tally ERP 9 allows remote connectivity which can be established if there are a working internet connection and a licensed version of Tally ERP 9 with a Tally.NET subscription on both the customer end and at the remote location.

Besides this, a valid User ID and password are required so remote users can be validated and they can access the program from their remote location.

Tally ERP 9, allows to create a master (ledger, stock item) on the voucher by the shortcut Alt+C.

To modify any master item on a voucher, we have to select the specific ledger on the sales voucher screen and press Ctrl+Enter.

Types of vouchers that can be created in Tally ERP 9 are: –

  • Contra Voucher – (F4): It points the transfer of funds from a bank account to the cash account or cash account to a bank account, or in a different bank account of different banks.
  • Payment Voucher – (F5): It explains the historical payments on each account like payment of salary, rental, etc.
  •  Receipt Voucher – (F6): Describes the transactions that relate to payments received.
  • Journal Voucher – (F7): It maintains the expenses to maintain the organization’s running costs.
  • Sales/Invoice Voucher – (F8): This voucher describes the sales made, it displays the sale invoice
  •  Credit Note Voucher – (Ctrl+F8): Entry to this voucher is made when a customer returns the products which weren’t correctly dispensed.
  • Purchase Voucher – (F9): Voucher made for items purchased for running the business like raw materials, etc.
  • Debit Note Voucher – (Ctrl+F9): Voucher for keeping records when goods are returned to suppliers due to damaged goods.
  • Reversing Journals – F10: It is a special entry that gets automatically reversed after the date of the issue.
  • Memo Voucher – (Ctrl+F10): This voucher marks the unknown expense at a moment of time which can be converted to actual sale voucher, or can be deleted.

It is a way to verify that the journal entries are correctly posted in the general ledger. In trial balance, the total of all debt balances should be equal to the total of all the credit balances.

28. Explain the default configuration of Tally ERP 9 provided for Balance Sheet?


Balance Sheet in Tally ERP 9 displays two different columns with Liabilities and Assets.  The balance sheet also displays the closing balances of all the primary groups and capital accounts along with the net profit for the specified period as required by the organization.

The applicant has to pay a fee of Rs. 93 + Service Tax as applicable, per PAN application. In case, the PAN card is to be dispatched outside India then the fee for processing PAN application is Rs. 864 (Rs. 93 application fees and Rs. 771 dispatch charges)/- will have to be paid by applicant.(plus service tax as applicable).

Application for PAN cannot be made on plain paper. The application for PAN is to be made in the prescribed form i.e. Form 49A/49AA as the case may be. In case of an applicant, being a company which has not been registered under the Companies Act, 2013, the application for allotment of a Permanent Account Number is to be made in SPICE-INC-32 specified under sub-section (1) of section 7 of the said Act for incorporation of the company.

82. What If I Submit Incomplete Pan Application I.e. Form 49a/49aa?


IT PAN Service Centers or TIN Facilitation Centers shall not receive any incomplete and deficient PAN application. However, these centers will assist applicants to correctly fill up form 49A/49AA (as the case may be).

83. Is It Necessary To Fill The Pan Application Form I.e. Form 49a/49aa In Block Letters?


Yes, Form 49A/49AA (as the case may be) should be filled legibly in BLOCK LETTERS and preferably in black ink. It should also be noted that, each box, wherever provided, should contain only one character (alphabet /number / punctuation sign) leaving a blank box after each word.

Yes, it is mandatory to provide the Assessing Officer (AO) Code in Form 49A/49AA. AO Code (i.e. Area Code, AO Type, Range Code and AO Number) of the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer must be filled up by the applicant. These details can be obtained from the Income Tax Office

Section 160 of Income-tax Act, 1961 provides that a non-resident, minor, lunatic, idiot, mentally retarded, deceased, wards of court and such other persons may be represented through a Representative Assessee.
In such cases,
In the application for PAN, details of the non-resident, minor, lunatic,    idiot, mentally retarded, deceased, wards of court, etc. should be provided.

  • Details of representative assessee have to be provided in item 14 of the application for PAN.
  • Proof of Identity and Proof of address is also required for representative assessee.

87. Who Has To Sign The Pan Application I.e. Form 49a/49aa?


Application in Form 49A/49AA must be signed (left thumb impression in case of persons unable to sing) by :

  • The applicant; or
  • Karta in case of HUF; or
  • Director of a Company; or
  • Authorised Signature in case of Association of Persons, Body of Individuals, Local Authority and Artificial Juridical Person; or
  • Partner in case of Firm/LLP; or
  • Trustee; or
