CAPM vs PMP Requirements

The prerequisites for the CAPM exam are as follows:

  • A secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or the global equivalent)
  • 1,500 hours of project experience

Because those planning to earn CAPM certification are not required to have project management experience or a four-year degree, the CAPM is ideal for recent community college graduates or even current students who want to bolster their resume with a credential that demonstrates commitment to a career in project management.

While the CAPM is ideal for people beginning their careers, candidates must have 23 hours of project management education before taking the exam. Project management education can be completed online, enabling candidates to fulfill this requirement without putting their professional or collegiate obligations on hold. Some universities may also offer project management education at this level as a part of a degree program.

How Difficult are the CAPM and PMP Exams?

Because the CAPM is geared toward entry-level project managers or those interested in a project management career, the CAPM exam is considered less rigorous than the PMP exam. The CAPM exam questions are derived from the PMBOK® Guide, PMI’s global standards for project management. The CAPM Handbook conveniently lists the percentage of questions related to each chapter of the PMBOK® Guide—meaning that those pursuing CAPM certification can adequately prepare for the exam by studying only the PMBOK® Guide.

The PMP exam, on the other hand, is appropriate for early career to established professionals with more significant project management experience, and is therefore more challenging to achieve. Like the CAPM, the PMP exam also covers the PMBOK® Guide, but it also includes questions designed to test whether the candidate knows how to handle real-world project management scenarios.

CAPM vs PMP: Industry-Wide Benefits

Considering CAPM certification is more accessible, more affordable, and requires less time and experience than PMP certification, project managers may ask themselves, “Why would I pursue PMP certification?” The answer is simple: The PMP is the most significant, industry-recognized certification for project managers worldwide.

PMPs work in a wide range of industries in almost every country. Many employers require PMP certification when hiring project managers because PMPs have demonstrated the knowledge and skills necessary to lead complex projects and direct project teams.

Why did I Decide to get CAPM Certification?

After being in the QA role for over 2 years, I was looking to advance my career to the next level.

I was looking for a certification or program that can enhance my skills and broaden my horizon at the same time. I didn’t want to restrict myself to a tester role and I had no inclination towards software code development.

Project Management seemed like a good option, hence I started researching the available certifications and programs in my region.

Now, some readers may contest my mode of learning – self-study versus certification, which is quite understandable as every individual has their own way of learning or studying. Right from the beginning, I tend to learn more if the study approach is well structured like a well-designed program or study material.

I do well if I am working towards a deadline and I can truly evaluate how much I have learned after my study. So for me enrolling in a Certification or University program seems like obvious choices.

After researching the available options and seeking guidance from others, I was interested in getting the PMP certification. Unfortunately, I did not meet the required experience eligibility criteria at that time so I could not apply for PMP certification.

Conclusion

CAPM is an entry-level certification for beginners and its purpose is to give an opportunity to anyone with little or no direct Project related experience to demonstrate his or her understanding of the basic principles and terminology of Project Management.

Whether you work in an organization that follows and practices PMBOK Guide or if you wish to diversify your skills, CAPM certification can certainly give you an edge over the others and help you stand out amongst the fellow team members.

You do not need project management work experience to take the CAPM examination. The registration process steps are straightforward and are clearly outlined in this tutorial.

Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide is the main study guide for this certification and is definitely a must to read the book to prepare for the examination.

I personally have seen the benefits of acquiring this CAPM certification – either if one chooses to continue working in the testing field or take a transition into a Project Management role.

My message to all the STH readers is to continuously learn, grow and evolve. If the readers feel that CAPM certification will take you one step closer to your desired role then go for it!
